Functions and Duties

NAB is an autonomous society, comprising technical & domain experts, for overseeing the effective functioning of the various automotive testing and homologation centres to facilitates collaborative automotive research & development (R&D) activities to take up and synergize the ongoing and new initiatives of the government for the growth of automotive section and to function as the repository of knowledge and domain expertise for facilitating and aiding various Ministries in their functioning under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India. The main activities of the NAB are: –

  • Carry out sponsored Research & Development projects for the industry / Government of India / national and international agencies.
  • Certification of vehicles and components as a notified agency as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.
  • Formulation of automotive standards.
  • Participation in national and international forum in the automotive technology and related fields.
  • Carry out own Research Projects in automotive technology.

National Automotive Board (NAB), established in 2013, is the leading automotive R&D organization of the country set up by the Automotive Industry with the Government of India. NAB is an autonomous body affiliated to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India. The NAB is one of the prime Testing and Certification Agency notified by Government of India under Rule 126 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
